THE STORY BEHIND THE ART

Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. Legend has it that he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish and drove the snakes out of Ireland, though this last is metaphorical since Ireland never had snakes. Saint Patrick's Day, March 17th, is celebrated worldwide by Irish and non-Irish alike with parades, cultural events, and the wearing of green.
